What is the difference between a Step Scale and a Skip Scale

There are only 3 Step Scales: Major, Melodic Minor, and Neapolitan Major; all other scales are Skip Scales.

A scale has a minimum of one tritone in the Major Scale and a maximum of three tritones in the Neapolitan Major scale; the Melodic Minor and all other scales have two tritones.

  • A step scale is written exclusively in steps.
  • A skip scale is written in steps and one or two minor skips.
